Pressage bandages are described in equine veterinary literature as elasticated support bandages designed for application to the carpal (knee) and tarsal (hock) regions, where effective bandaging can be clinically challenging (Dyson, 2003; Hayes, 2002).

“Beneficial in the long term management of wounds. Ideal for keeping dressings in place. They save the owner time and money.”

Pressage Veterinary Bandages

Pressage bandages provide an excellent method of providing a light bandage in place and providing a minimal risk of pressure sores and are used routinely by one author Sue J Dyson.

Bursae, tendons and Ligaments: Most of the acquired bursae occur in places which are either difficult to bandage, or where repeated bandaging is likely to result in rub sores. Elasticated support bandages (Pressage bandages) are now available and are particularly good for the knee and hock.

Hayes, M.H. (2002) Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners. Vintage/Ebury (a Division of Random House).

The Pressage bandage is a reusable elasticated stocking that has a zip fastening that applies even pressure over the dressing and padding layers to reduce oedema, wound exudation and proud flesh. Pressage bandages are particularly useful for more superficial wounds and following surgical procedures where there is minimal wounding and exudate.

Aspinall, V. (2019) Clinical Procedures in Veterinary Nursing: Chapter 14. Elsevier.

The Pressage bandage is a reusable elasticized stocking with a zip fastener. It is available in different sizes for the tarsus (hock) region and the carpus (knee region). It provides even pressure over the primary and secondary dressings and can be applied a s a secondary dressing in some circumstances when exudate is not a significant problem.

Pressage bandages are especially useful for long term wound management, as they can be washed, reducing the number of bandages needed.

The use of elasticated ‘zip-up’ ‘Pressage’ bandages should be considered on cost and convenience grounds.
